Description

Tulipa 'Red Baby Doll' produces flowers consisting of double scarlet satin corollas. It enlivens spring flower beds. Not very tall, it will be at its best in borders. It also makes pretty potted arrangements. Surround it with light blue or white flowers like forget-me-nots or hyacinths, to create flower beds that are both fragrant and colourful. This tulip blooms early in the season, after the early single tulips. Its flowers last a long time, both in the garden and in a vase.

Like all tulips, 'Red Baby Doll' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, registered in 2009 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of double early tulips, whose main characteristic is to bloom at the same height, making it a category appreciated by enthusiasts of well-arranged flower beds. They are often offered in a mix of colours under the name 'Murillo' tulips. The rather stout and relatively small double flowers perch on strong 30 to 35cm (12 to 14in) stems, just above the broadly lanceolate leaves. The flowers open almost flat. Their intense red is enhanced by shiny petals. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

Double early tulips are renowned for their rich colours, solid and resistant flowers, and suitability for both gardens and vases. They are among the most commonly used varieties for cut flowers. They are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. 'Red Baby Doll' contrasts beautifully with the white of 'Cardinal Mindszenty', the black-purple of 'Black Jack', and the bright yellow of 'Orca'. It also works well with the blue flowers of grape hyacinths or wood hyacinths.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, 15cm (6in) deep and spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. They will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Place them in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
