Description

Ornithogalum umbellatum is a perennial bulbous plant that blooms in spring. From April to May, it is covered with clusters of white star-shaped flowers. The 3cm (1in) flowers have a wide green line on the back of the tepals. They are carried by stems 15-20cm (6-8in) tall.

The Star of Bethlehem is nicknamed Eleven-o'clock Lady because its flowers open at eleven o'clock and close in the evening. It forms a clump of deciduous leaves. The leaves are bright green with a white central line. Ornithogalum umbellatum can reach a height of 10 to 30cm (4 to 12in).

This is a variety that has excellent hardiness. Native to Europe, it is found in meadows and along roadsides. Grow it at the edge of flower beds with perennials and in front of bushes. You can also place it in rock gardens or wooded areas.

Planting and care

Ornithogalum umbellatum is placed in a sunny position in a fairly fertile and well-drained soil. Do not place it in a damp corner. It is a thermophilic plant, meaning it requires heat and sunlight while avoiding the scorching rays of the summer sun. However, you can still cultivate it in light shade. Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of 5 to 8cm (2 to 3in) and space them 10cm (4in) apart. It is a plant resistant to diseases and parasites. Ornithogalum self-seeds spontaneously, which is why it can become invasive in mild climate regions. To prevent this, cut the flower stems as soon as they have faded.
