Erythroniums are original bulbous plants that bear very graceful lantern-like flowers. The nickname "dent de chien" (dog's tooth) comes from the bulb's shape resembling a canine tooth. These Wood Lilies produce clumps of oval leaves, often marbled, among which appear pendulous bell-shaped flowers with recurved petals. The colours vary from white like Erythronium 'White Beauty', to yellow with Erythronium 'Pagoda' and pink. Erythroniums are planted in cool, humus-rich but light soil in partial shade or light sun, preferably in the north. Adding compost at planting time is beneficial. It is a very hardy plant, only fearing drought. Leave the bulbs in place, they will spread. Erythroniums are perfect in dappled shade, rock gardens, border plantings, heathland, and containers. Tip: Mulch in summer with compost to keep the soil cool.
