The Snowflakes are small hardy bulbous plants, very graceful, which flower at various dates depending on the species. Native to Europe, Leucojum aestivum or Summer Snowflakes bear from April to May 3 to 5 pendant white bells edged with green, and Leucojum vernum or Spring Snowflakes as early as February with 1 or 2 large flowers per stem. Very similar to snowdrops, they develop linear or cylindrical basal leaves. Snowflakes prefer heavy, clayey, rich soil, but without fresh manure, in light sun or partial shade. They tolerate limestone well and appreciate a cool and humid environment. Plant them from September at a depth of 10cm (4in) and with spacing. Weed and let them naturalize. In autumn, divide old plants. Snowflakes are perfect in light woodland, pond edge, wild bed, natural garden, and container, associated with alpine forget-me-nots, blue or pink, or primroses  like Primula vialii.
