Description

Fritillaria persica 'Magic Bells' is a recent variety. It produces extraordinary stems of flower spikes, over 30cm (12in) long. The flowers are green washed with mauve, adding a unique touch to the garden.

The rigid stems bear clusters of 15 to 20 fragrant bell-shaped flowers.

Majestic and elegant, fritillaries add height to your tulip beds.

Their bulbs emit an odour that deters rodents, especially moles. Plant them with tulips bulbs so the scent can keep predators away. The odour is imperceptible to humans once the bulb is planted.

Planting and care

Fritillaria persica 'Magic Bells' thrives in full sun. It needs light but not necessarily direct sunlight. Ideally, it thrives in a continental climate where winters and summers are dry and springs are humid. Plant it in fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy soil to prevent the appearance of fungi. If the drainage is insufficient, the fritillaria may rot. Plant it from September to October by adding sand, gravel, or pumice to the planting hole. Place the bulb at a depth of 20cm (8in). In winter, we recommend mulching the fritillaria. Remove faded flowers if you do not want them to self-seed. Do not water your fritillaries in summer and winter. If the soil is too dry in spring, lightly water (without excess) to start the bulb.
