Description

The 'Meilena' Rusticana® Cluster-flowering Rose, also marketed in some countries as 'Poppy Flash', is a variety with abundant and bright flowering ideal for beds and borders. Its vibrant vermilion-red flowers evoke the hue of poppies and renew from June until the first frosts. Arranged in dense clusters of 2 to 7 flowers, they provide a vibrant display throughout the season. Its satin-like English green foliage, slightly tinged with bronze, harmoniously complements the flowering and boasts excellent disease resistance. This easy to grow and very hardy rose adapts well to both cold climates and warmer regions, ensuring worry-free cultivation for both novice and experienced gardeners.

The Rusticana® 'Meilena' Rose belongs to the Rosaceae family and the floribunda category, resulting from hybridisations between polyantha roses and hybrid teas, and is characterised by generous and perpetual flowering. Its 8 cm diameter flowers adopt a classic turbinate shape when opening, before unfolding into a looser cup, elegantly revealing around twenty reflexed petals. At full bloom, they reveal a heart of golden stamens that add extra charm to their sophisticated appearance. Lightly scented, they exude a fruity, delicate, and subtle fragrance. The dense, satin-like foliage in an English green subtly tinged with bronze, perfectly complements the flowering and ensures excellent disease resistance. This bushy rose reaches 80 cm in height with a spread of 40 to 50 cm, forming a balanced and well-branched silhouette. It has been awarded several prestigious distinctions, including the RNRS Certificate in the UK in 1970, Gold Medals in Rome and Geneva in 1972, as well as a Certificate of Merit in New Zealand in 1974.

The Rusticana® 'Meiléna' Rose fits perfectly into various landscape designs. It thrives in sunny positions. It tolerates different soil types, including slightly chalky or clay soil, provided that good drainage is ensured. Planted in beds or borders as a single variety, it forms homogeneous and spectacular displays. It also lends itself to more natural designs if grouped in threes with perennials such as yarrows or catmints, whose soft hues highlight the intensity of its flowers. It also pairs well with light ornamental grasses like Briza media, adding a fluid dynamic to the arrangement. For a more romantic scene, it can be accompanied by low bushes such as lavenders or caryopteris which will enhance its glowing red brilliance while attracting pollinators. In addition to its ornamental role in the garden, its cut flowers can be used to create charming small round bouquets ideal for adding an elegant touch indoors.

Planting and care

To plant your Rusticana Meilena rose, prepare the soil by working it to a depth of 25 cm, breaking up any clumps and adding a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn meal at the bottom of the planting hole. Place your plant after removing it from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil. Backfill and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root establishment. Also consider feeding your rose with a special rose fertiliser to promote flowering.

Roses often develop spots or look unsightly by late summer, but this does not affect their growth. These spots are not harmful to the plant; it's a natural occurrence. Follow all our advice to address this issue and read our article: Help: My Roses Have Spots
