Description

The Petunia Supertunia 'Picasso in Pink' is a particularly vigorous and floriferous annual plant with a trailing and cascading habit. Its countless large funnel-shaped flowers display a sparkling colour; they are a particularly vibrant pink, edged with a fine yellow-green border. Its unparalleled floribundance, from spring to autumn, and its beautiful shimmering cascade effect make it naturally suited for hanging baskets. This generous plant thrives in the sun with regular watering.

Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America. Petunia Supertunia is a sterile hybrid petunia dating back to 2006, with a trailing and weeping habit rather than an upright one, making it a magnificent plant for hanging baskets. It is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

Petunia Supertunia 'Picasso in Pink' is an improvement on the 'Picasso' variety, with even more intense colours. It forms a vigorous and trailing clump of 25 cm (10in) high, cascading up to 90 cm (35in). The plant is in bloom from June to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly fed. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are a very vibrant medium pink, and each one is bordered by a fine lemon-green edge, almost the same colour as the foliage. They are closely packed together on long, fuzzy stems bearing dense foliage, creating a fantastic, variegated effect. The hairy leaves are ovate with a pointed tip with entire edges and a greyish-green tint; it is vigorous and healthy. This variety tolerates adverse weather conditions and heat well.

No other annual flowering plant has been subjected to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this Supertunia 'Picasso in Pink' variety. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets, alone or mixed with a red petunia, a purple-leaved morning glory (I. 'Sweet Heart Purple') or a white alyssum, as it will not smother companion plants. If you want it to stand out, plant multiple plants to create an original ground cover at the base of grey-leaved plants such as nepetas faassenii or annual poppies in pastel colours.

Supplied as growing plants measuring 4 to 8cm (2 to 3in) in 5 small plugs measuring 2.8 cm (1in) in diameter and 4 cm (2in) high, individually labelled. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (supertunia petunias tolerate a light late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Their habit will be more branched if you pinch the tips of the young shoots. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They will need regular and frequent watering during hot summer temperatures. They are floriferous and fast-growing, very hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend flowering.
