Description

Collection of our 5 best trailing petunias with single flowers: 'Supertunia Mini Vista Violet Star' a beautiful violet star pattern on a white background, 'Supertunia Bordeaux Purple Vein' intensely veined pale pink with purple, 'Lavender Sky' veined with violet and discreetly sprinkled with white dots on a soft mauve background, 'Supertunia Vista Paradise' pink-red and 'Supertunia Vista Bubblegum', with funnel-shaped flowers in a candy pink color. These vigorous plants flower continuously until October. These annuals unfurl waves of multicolored flowers in summer beds and joyfully overflow from pots and hanging baskets. They should be grown in sunny, fertile, light and moist soil.

The Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and are all native to the warm regions of South America. Hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. Trailing petunias were discovered by chance in 1989, when a scientist noticed a particularly vigorous wild petunia covered in bright flowers; the Petunia inflata. Crossed with others, this species gave birth to trailing petunias, which were given the name Surfinias by marketing. The Supertunia Petunia is a sterile hybrid petunia dating back to 2006, which has a trailing and weeping habit rather than an upright one, making it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

In this collection, we have gathered the 5 varieties of petunias that we consider to be the most outstanding, both in terms of ornamental value and ease of cultivation. The 'Supertunia Mini Vista Violet Star'' petunia, with a dense and truly trailing habit, produces stems over 30 cm (12in) long covered in 3.5 cm (1in) diameter flowers, a beautiful violet star pattern on a white background. The Supertunia Bordeaux Purple Vein, reaching a height of 30 cm (12in), is very floriferous and highly interesting in hanging baskets with its long densely hairy stems covered in 3.5 cm (1in) diameter flowers. The 'Lavender Sky', around 25 cm (10in) tall, has 7 cm (3in) diameter flowers veined with violet and discreetly sprinkled with white dots on a soft mauve background. The 'Supertunia Vista Paradise', measuring between 40 cm (16in) in height, bears a multitude of 5 cm (2in) diameter flowers, remarkable for their astonishing pink-red color, an unusual hue for petunias. And finally, the 'Supertunia Vista Bubblegum', with flowers in a candy pink color finely veined with dark pink, forms a particularly vigorous and trailing clump, reaching 40 cm (16in) in height (sometimes 60 cm (24in)) and cascading up to 90 cm (35in), or even 1.20 m (4ft) at the end of the season.

These varieties tolerate adverse weather conditions and heat, and the faded flowers fall off naturally without the need for pruning.

No other flowering annual plant has undergone such extensive breeding work by breeders for over a century. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendor and length of flowering, as evidenced by this beautiful collection. Place your petunias in large pots or hanging baskets, above walls, wherever their flowering stems can hang down. You can also plant them in mass plantings, in large swaths, to punctuate borders of plants with gray foliage such as ceraistes or artemisias, or to cover the base of roses.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being installed outside once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in open ground or in a pot. If you want to install them in open ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Petunias will flower from June to October. Plant your petunias in a sunny or semi-shaded position sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich but above all well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer periods. Petunias are sensitive to frost (minimum -1°C (30.2°F)). Highly floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertilizer for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking attractive and extend the flowering period.
