Description

Tulipa 'Crown of Negrita' is a new and rare variety of Triumph tulip with a unique aesthetic. It forms a large corolla, made up of petals that are curiously rolled up at the edge and somewhat tubular, giving it a crown-like appearance. The flowers boast an intense dark violet colour. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in April-May, just after the early tulips. It would be beautiful in a romantic bouquet or in a well-kept garden, paired with small white muscari and its counterpart, T. 'White Liberstar', or its famous pink-flowered cousin, ‘Crown of Dynasty'.

Tulipa 'Crown of Negrita' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is of horticultural origin. This mutation of the 'Dynasty' tulip was recently introduced in the Netherlands. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to present flowers with a narrow cup. It will reach a height of 45cm (18in) when in bloom, with good resistance to rain and wind. The flowers appear at the top of tall stems, well above the widely lanceolate green-blue leaves. The large, single flowers have a slightly square shape, with a thick texture, and are composed of large, slightly undulate and recurved petals. The colour of the petals is a beautiful gradient from white to fresh pink, from the base to the edge. Flowering takes place from April 15th to May 15th, in the heart of the tulip season.

Tulipa 'Crown of Negrita' works well in large, well-drained beds. Plant them alongside foliage plants (grasses, fennel, alchemillas, tiarellas), which will cover the space left empty by their dry foliage in summer. By mixing tulips, you can also create your own harmonies. Plant them with pastel-coloured tulips, pink tulips ('New Design'), white tulips ('Calgary'), or purple tulips ('Synaeda Amor'). You can also plant them with narcissus like 'Thalia' or 'Mount Hood'. They can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. They work well on balconies and patios. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
