Description
Picea abies 'Zagwiżdże' is a rare dwarf cultivar of the Norway spruce, of Polish origin. With a quite regular, flat and spherical habit, this conifer develops upright, rigid and slightly bent shoots that point outward. They are green with a slight bluish tint. With slow growth, it is suitable for small gardens, planted as a standalone feature, or enlivens a rockery or container on the terrace. This variety is sensitive to soil and air drought as well as pollution.
Picea abies, also known as the Norway spruce or red fir, is an evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family. This species originates from northern Europe, more specifically Scandinavia. In its natural environment, the tree has a typically conical and pyramidal habit and can reach 30 m in height, or even more in Eastern Europe. This tree is traditionally used as a Christmas tree in Europe. It thrives in well-drained and moist soils and does not mind very low temperatures.
The 'Zagwiżdże' variety, derived from this species, is a dwarf form with a flattened, rounded habit. Discovered by Professor Włodzimierz Seneta on a spruce growing in Zagwiżdże, this variety was introduced to the market in 2004 by the Szmit nurseries in Pęchcin. With slow growth, there is little data so far on its final size, but it reaches 1 m in height and diameter at 10 years old and remains very compact. It features short, stiff twigs arranged in a spiral on highly tiered branches. Its young spring shoots are a very soft and bright green, then its foliage darkens and becomes vivid green with a bluish tint. Its small evergreen leaves are very prickly, rigid needles arranged all around the twigs in a bottlebrush-like manner. The root system of spruces is shallow and running, making them difficult to transplant when mature and particularly sensitive to wind.
Dwarf spruce 'Zagwiżdże' stands out for its original appearance and small size, requiring no maintenance. It can be planted in rockeries or small beds. Well-suited to container growing, it will also decorate the terrace. This spruce fits perfectly into a rockery setting and contemporary decor. It can be paired with dwarf conifers with very different habits, such as columnar or creeping varieties. Conifers provide long-lasting structure to a space and are an excellent alternative to pruned boxwoods. They form beautiful combinations with heathers and Japanese forest grass, for example.

Plant Picea abies 'Zagwiżdże' from September to November and from February to May in deep, well-drained, light, not too chalky, moist to dry soil. Sandy or stony soil will be perfectly suitable. Choose a very sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls thoroughly before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously during the first few years, and in case of prolonged drought. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and hoe the soil in summer. This extremely hardy conifer dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil in winter. Pruning is not necessary, quite the opposite, as this plant reaches its full potential when allowed to grow freely.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
