Description
Picea abies 'Tompa' is a dwarf variety of Norway spruce that forms an adorable small flattened cone of bright green. Its needles transition from soft green to olive green. Decorative cones adorn this pretty conifer from September onwards, when mature. Plant it in a flowerbed, rockery, or pot to decorate the terrace all year round.
Picea abies 'Tompa' is a horticultural selection of the Norway spruce, resembling the famous 'Alberta Globe' spruce, which it surpasses. Picea abies, also known as Norway spruce or red fir, is a large evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family, native to northern Europe. In its natural environment, it has a typically conical, pyramidal habit and can reach 30m in height. It thrives in well-drained, moist soil and is unfazed by very low temperatures. The 'Tompa' variety exhibits very slow growth. Eventually, the plant will reach 90cm in height and about 50–60cm in diameter. This small "fir" produces short, tightly packed shoots, densely covered with very short needles, arranged in a bottlebrush-like fashion. The reddish-brown winter buds are very decorative. Its spring shoots are a very soft, bright green, later turning uniformly green. 'Tompa' is a monoecious variety, meaning male and female cones appear in different locations on the same tree: the ovate and yellow-orange male cones develop on one-year-old shoots, while female cones appear at the shoot tips. The latter, initially upright and green to reddish, later turn brown and pendulous. The root system of spruces is shallow and running, making them difficult to transplant when mature and particularly vulnerable to wind.
With its lovely broad conical habit, truly compact size, low maintenance, and ease of cultivation, Norway spruce 'Tompa' is a perfect plant for rockeries and terraces. It pairs well with large stones, geometric lines, and masonry work. It can be combined with flattened dwarf conifers (Picea abies Nidiformis) or upright (juniper 'Blue Arrow'). The architectural qualities of conifers naturally shine in a contemporary garden. They pair particularly well with heathers.

Planting and care
Plant Picea abies 'Tompa' from September to November and from February to May in deep, well-drained, light, preferably neutral or slightly acidic soil, moist to occasionally dry. A sandy or stony soil that is not too chalky will be perfectly suitable. Choose a spot that is very sunny or partially shaded and sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls thoroughly before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously for the first few years, and during prolonged dry spells. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and hoe the soil in summer. This extremely hardy conifer dislikes heavy soils that are waterlogged in winter.

The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
