Description

TheĀ  Koningin Wilhelmina Peony is a deciduous perennial shrub with early flowering from April to early May. Despite its short flowering period, it can live up to fifty years. Its enormous double flowers offer an intoxicating fragrance. Measuring 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12in) in diameter, they are cup-shaped blooms in a pale pink colour. Its dark green foliage with a bluish hints is deciduous.

At maturity, this Paeonia can reach a height of 1.5 m (5ft). Robust and vigorous, it is native to temperate Eurasia and the West Coast of the United States. In China, the peony is the queen of flowers. It is an imperial plant, symbolising nobility and social success.

The Queen Wilhelmine Peony is suitable for flowerbeds and borders, as well as for planting in isolation. It pairs well with perennials such as phlox and chrysanthemums, or even with grasses to create stunning mixed borders. To fully enjoy its gentle fragrance, place it near frequently used pathways or even in pots on terraces and balconies. It also makes lovely cut flowers. Easy to care for, it is an ideal plant for those who don't have much time to maintain their garden.

Planting and care

Place the Queen Wilhelmine PeonyĀ mainly in the sun. In southern regions you should provide partial shade, protecting it during the hottest hours of the day. Plant from September to May, except during freezing periods, in fertile and deep, humus-bearing soil that is moist but well-drained, to prevent the roots from rotting. Easy to grow, peonies require little maintenance. During planting, dig a large hole measuring 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) on each side and add potting soil, river sand, and peat. Place the collar at ground level. Do not overcrowd the plants to ensure proper air circulation. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season with regular watering. Peonies are known to be homebodies, so you shouldn't move them after planting. (If you do they have to be divided, otherwise they won't flower for several years). From February to April or October to November, cut the foliage to ground level, taking care with the young shoots. Provide a stake to support the floral stems, and remove faded flowers during the season. Protect peonies from viruses, nematodes, and thrips larvae. Armillaria (honey fungus) can cause rapid plant death, and stem rot destroys shoots and flower buds.
