Our Orangery and Winter Garden Plants. Citrus trees, particularly lemon trees and orange trees, but also camellias and many Mediterranean plants, are among the most famous orangery plants. These tender plants, grown in containers, can spend the summer outdoors but must be wintered in frost-free conditions. Other beautiful exotics like Arabian jasmine and Stephanotis are prized for their flowering that perfumes the winter garden. The orangerie also hosts tree ferns with large, lush fronds, passion flowers with exotic flowers and fruits, and tropical palm trees. Bougainvillea is a very floriferous, tender Mediterranean plant that must be protected from frost in most regions. Less common but equally interesting, olive trees and abutilons make very beautiful plants for decorating a winter garden. There are many more to discover in these pages.

The first orangeries were created in Italy during the Renaissance. An orangery is a glazed building, so very bright, allowing the sunlight to warm it during winter. It's a space maintained between 10 and 15°C, with a not-too-dry atmosphere, intended to host plants only during winter.
