Description
Roscoea beesiana is a beautiful and hardy bulbous plant, appreciated for its exotic and summer creamy flowers striped with purple, resembling orchid flowers.
Also known as "False Orchid" or "Orchid Ginger", this 40cm (16in) tall plant is a perennial with fleshy roots. It forms a clump of strong tubular stems with deciduous, quite narrow gramineous leaves with sheathing bases of medium green colour. In June, the cream to-yellow flowers striped with purple, arranged in short spikes, consists of a long curved tube and three petals, with the upper one forming a helmet and the lower one a lip; there are a few smaller stamens.
Originating from the mountains of Asia, Roscoea beesiana grows in moist, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil in partial shade. The young shoots take time to emerge.
Roscoea beesiana pairs well with rodgersias, cimifugas, and hostas in any ericaceous flowerbed.

Planting and care
The Roscoea beesiana should be planted in spring at a depth of 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) and with a spacing of 20cm (8in), in partial shade, in neutral to acidic soil (hydrangea, rhododendron, azalea beds). They are very hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F) in light, well-drained soil with a thick layer of mulch. You can also grow them in pots, with 3 plants per 18 cm (7in) pot, preferably in partial shade.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
