Tigridia pavonia, also known as Peacock Tiger Flower, is a bulbous plant with corms, appreciated for its large, brightly coloured triangular flowers, with a strong exotic appearance. Adorned with a purple striped throat, they display different colours such as red, bright pink, purple, orange, yellow, or white depending on the varieties. Each flower only lasts for one day, but they succeed each other on the plants for two months. The foliage, composed of large sword-shaped leaves, unfolds like a fan. It is not very hardy, and cultivation in open ground should be reserved for only the mildest climates. Tigridias make beautiful potted plants for the terrace or balcony, to be stored in the greenhouse or conservatory during winter.

In very well-protected borders, where frost remains weak, it is possible to leave the bulbs in the ground during winter, during the resting period. Choose a clear, sunny and sheltered location for them. Do not hesitate to plant them directly in pure sand, their hardiness will be even better. Plant Tigridia pavonia in groups and cultivate it in full sun, or partial shade in hot areas.
