Hedychiums or Wild Gingers are frost-tender rhizomatous plants with magnificent flower spikes that bring a lovely exotic touch. Also known as Longose, these generous perennials develop long stems with lanceolate green leaves in two parallel rows. They produce 20cm (8in) long spikes with fragrant flowers. In spring, Hedychiums are planted in a very humus-rich, deep, well-drained soil  - moist in summer, and rather dry in winter. They appreciate a warm and sunny exposure, sheltered from strong winds. Mulching in autumn or overwintering in a cold greenhouse is necessary. Of Indian origin, Hedychiums are used in exotic borders or in large containers. For a scarlet red colour, the variety coccineum 'Tara' and for a softer colour, the variety yunnanense, cream yellow. Tip: In autumn, cut the stems that have flowered at their base.
