Description
L’Hosta fortunei ‘Patriot’ est une variété recherchée pour son feuillage remarquablement contrasté : chaque feuille présente un large centre vert foncé entouré d’une bordure irrégulière crème devenant blanche. Cette panachure se voit de loin et anime les endroits ombragés du jardin souvent peu fleuris. La plante forme avec les années une touffe large et généreuse, suffisamment dense pour habiller le pied d’arbustes ou meubler une grande bordure. Rustique et dotée d'une bonne longévité, cette vivace peut rester de nombreuses années au même endroit.
Le genre Hosta appartient à la famille des Asparagacées. 'Patriot' est une vivace caduque : son feuillage jaunit et disparaît en automne, puis sa souche redémarre au printemps. Cette variété américaine a été sélectionnée par John Machen Jr. à Mobjack Nurseries, en Virginie, puis enregistrée en 1991. C’est un sport de l’Hosta ‘Francee’, autrement dit une mutation apparue spontanément sur cette variété et conservée pour ses caractères particuliers. ‘Patriot’ se distingue notamment par sa bordure blanche beaucoup plus large. Il a été élu Hosta of the Year en 1997 et a reçu l’Award of Garden Merit en 2012. Un pied adulte forme une touffe mesurant 45 à 55 cm de haut pour 70 à 90 cm de large. Les feuilles sont ovales à légèrement cordiformes, épaisses, nervurées et un peu gaufrées. Leur marge apparaît crème au début de la saison puis devient blanche, tandis que le centre conserve son coloris vert soutenu. En juillet et août, des hampes dépassent le feuillage et s'élèvent à 70 ou 80 cm de hauteur. Elles portent des fleurs en trompettes lavande à bleu lavande, réunies en grappes assez lâches. C'est une plante de terre fraîche qui se plaît sous un climat océanique, suffisamment humide et frais en été.
Sous des arbres, au bord d’une allée ombragée ou dans un jardin d’inspiration japonaise, cet hosta ‘Patriot’ accompagnera l’Hakonechloa macra, une fougère de type Dryopteris erythrosora, l’Epimedium × perralchicum ‘Frohnleiten’ et la Tiarella cordifolia. Leurs feuillages fins ou découpés contrastent avec les grandes feuilles panachées de l’hosta et habillent le sol. On peut aussi glisser quelques narcisses entre les touffes : ils fleurissent tôt au printemps, avant que les hostas n’aient entièrement déployé leurs feuilles.

Hosta 'Patriot' plants are planted in spring or autumn. They like a deep, rich, humus-bearing, friable soil, preferably neutral to acid (in any case low in lime), moist to wet throughout the year. Place them in partial shade or dappled shade, in a position sheltered from strong winds.
Prepare a planting hole 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm. If your soil is heavy, mix half potting compost with crumbled soil, partially backfill and place your plant with its root ball so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm of soil. The addition of a base fertiliser (dried blood, horn powder) will feed your plant during its rooting period without risk of burning. Make sure to place the collar well above soil level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, water regularly for a few weeks to help your plant establish. Also water regularly in a dry summer.
With their shared preference for damp places, slugs and snails never settle very far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker, tougher foliage, and are therefore less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your hosta clumps by surrounding them with Ferramol-based pellets (approved for organic farming), eggshells, coffee grounds, shredded prunings or any dry, rough natural substance that deters them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods, because unlike chickens, they do not scratch up the soil and do not attack the green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a scent that repels slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.

In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
