Description

Epimedium perralchicum Fröhnleiten is a low and dense spreading perennial. This hybrid is the result of cross-breeding between Epimedium parralderianum and the Epimedium pinatum colchicum

It thrives under trees, between shrubs, or at the base of a hedge. It is at its best in partial shade, even in a soil filled with tree and shrub roots. From April to May, a bouquet of numerous pendant flowers measuring 1 to 2 cm (1in) in diameter appears. These flowers are bright yellow with brown spurs. They resemble small columbines.

The evergreen foliage of Epimedium Fröhnleiten is beautifully decorative, green with purple markings in spring and glossy green in summer.  The leaves are divided into three to nine elongated leaflets, more thorny than the typical variety, and measure 4 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) in length. They are tough in winter. Rhizomes spread slowly from its stump to form beautiful carpets.

Originating from the Mediterranean Basin and Asia, this Epimedium is very hardy.  At maturity, it can reach a height of 40 cm (16in). It can be placed in damp areas of a rockery, flower bed, or under trees. Placing it along a path with tulips allows you to fully enjoy its charm.

Planting and care

This plant flowers well in partial shade.  Place it in a position which is sheltered from cold and drying winds. Plant it in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Epimedium does not tolerate limestone. Adding ericaceous compost or good leaf compost is beneficial for it. Once it is well established, it requires very little maintenance. In regions with harsh winters, below -15°C (5°F), provide light mulching. Late frosts can also damage young shoots. Watering should be frequent. For a better appearance, remove old leaves before flowering. Epimedium Fröhnleiten can be susceptible to weevils and mosaic virus.
