Description
Echinacea Sunny Meadow Mama is a variety of echinacea that offers one of the best combinations in terms of habit, floribundity, and colour. This perennial plant with excellent durability provides a particularly generous, bright yellow summer flowering. As radiant as it is generous, it thrives in a sunny border, alongside perennials and annuals in shades of blue, purple, and orange for a captivating visual effect.
Native to the western United States, from Georgia to Michigan through Oklahoma and Ohio, Echinacea purpurea is a perennial with a strong character that naturally colonizes rocky meadows, savannas, clear undergrowth, and roadside edges. 'Sunny Meadow Mama' is part of a line of echinaceas selected in the Netherlands by AB-Cultivars for their flower power. The plant forms a clump approximately 55 cm (22in) high and 50 cm (20in) wide. This plant does not weaken or collapse, demonstrating excellent durability. The opposite lanceolate leaves are dark green and covered in rough hairs. The abundant flowering from July to October is loved by butterflies. The branched stems each terminate in a solitary flower head, surrounded by very bright yellow petals that hang down. The fruit is an achene that releases seeds that birds are fond of. This plant firmly and deeply anchors itself in the soil thanks to its well-developed root system.
Echinacea Sunny Meadow Mama can be grown in the ground or in a large pot, in full sun, in any well-drained soil that is not too dry in summer. This perennial can be planted in borders mixed with other compact varieties of echinacea, or alongside compact tritomas, achilleas, daisies, 'Echinops, and coreopsis. Lighten the scene by adding some ornamental grasses like Stipa tenuifolia, Muhlenbergia capillaris, etc. The beautiful colours of echinacea are also loved in fresh or dried flower arrangements.
A medicinal plant: In homoeopathy, echinacea root is used to fight colds and strengthen the immune system, properties first used by Native Americans. The name Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos, meaning "hedgehog-like," and acea, meaning "having the shape of," referring to the appearance of the flower's centre.

Planting and care
Echinacea Sunny Meadow Mama sometimes takes time to establish itself. However, once in place it requires no particular care and is very resistant to pests and diseases. It is best planted in spring, in a sunny location, in a mixture of compost and garden soil. The soil must be deep and loose to accommodate its root system. Cut off faded flowers as they appear to prolong the flowering period. Divide the clump when flowering slows down. It is a plant with rhizomes that can become invasive if it likes its surroundings. As the plant ages, it becomes more susceptible to aphid attacks and powdery mildew. Mulch the base in May to keep it moist in summer, as it is sensitive to drought during flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
