Nothing will grow into a beautiful vegetable or ornamental garden plant without a sound root system. While roots do need loose and well-drained soil around the plant to thrive, that's not all. Fertiliser will also be beneficial during the growth period of plants. Such fertilisers should be low in nitrogen, have moderate levels of potassium, but above all be rich in phosphorus.
