More information

The 'Fiskeby V' Edamame (Glycine max) is an early and productive variety of soybean, adapted to the climatic conditions in Europe, especially in the cooler regions. This annual, climbing plant is rich in proteins like beans, peas, and broad beans. Soybean thrives in sandy soil, fairly rich and well-drained. It is easy to cultivate and deserves a greater place in our vegetable gardens.

Description

The 'Fiskeby V' Vegetable Soybean (Glycine max) is an early and productive variety of soybean, adapted to the climatic conditions in Europe, particularly in the cooler regions. This annual, climbing plant is rich in proteins like beans, peas, and fava beans. Soybean thrives in sandy soil, fairly rich and well-drained, and is easy to cultivate, deserving a greater place in our vegetable gardens.

The vegetable soybean, also known as yellow soybean or Chinese pea, belongs to the Fabaceae family (legumes) like beans and many other vegetables in the vegetable garden. It is native to East Asia. Its straight stems rise over one metre high and bear leaves similar to bean leaves. Flowers then bloom in pairs at the axils of the leaves, which develop into pods containing two to four seeds each. These can be consumed fresh or dried. Its high protein content makes it a good food in a vegetarian diet.

Soybean cultivation is similar to that of beans: Sowing is done in May when the soil is sufficiently warm. It requires a minimum of warmth and sunlight to grow. Harvesting takes place 75 to 90 days later in August-September when the pods are dry. They can also be harvested while still green and fresh to be consumed as Edamame.

Planting and care

Soy is sown in warm, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Sandy soils are particularly suitable for it.

Sowing in open ground: sowing takes place in late spring, when there is no longer any risk of frost. It is done directly in the ground, with a seed placed every 5cm (2in) or so, in furrows spaced about 70cm (28in) apart. Then cover with fine soil and, if necessary, water lightly.
