Hypericum kalmianum Sunny Boulevard Proven Winners - St. John's wort

Hypericum kalmianum Sunny Boulevard is a variety of Kalmian St. John's Wort that is particularly compact and floriferous, adding to this range of popular bushes while maintaining the accommodating nature that characterises these kings of summer. Well suited for ornamenting small gardens, as well as patios and balconies, it forms a dense ball adorned with narrow, bright green foliage reminiscent of willow leaves. The foliage highlights its countless small golden-yellow flowers adorned with a lovely cluster of stamens. They bloom all summer and produce red berries that persist on the branches until late in the season. In autumn, its leaves often take on beautiful colours due to the cold. Sunny Boulevard is a recent horticultural creation derived from Hypericum kalmianum, a botanic species native to North America. Sunny Boulevard was developed in the United States. All St. John's wort belong to the Hypericaceae family. With a moderately fast growth rate, the bush reaches an average size of 80cm (32in) in all directions, depending on growing conditions. It has a rounded, very dense, and well-proportioned habit, carried by quadrangular stems. They are adorned with long, entire, and narrow leaves, mostly semi-evergreen in winter (deciduous in very harsh winters). The elongated, pointed leaves are 4 to 6cm (2in) long, and a beautiful acid green that sometimes turns orange-red in autumn. It flowers for 3 months from July to September, depending on the climate. The flowers are abundantly produced in clusters of 5 to 7 flowers, 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. They consist of 5 rounded, golden-yellow to orange petals arranged in an open cup. The centre of the flower is occupied by a particularly decorative cluster of prominent stamens. This flowering is followed by the formation of small, conical, red fruits that turn browner when ripe.

St. John's wort is appreciated for its very long flowering period and its real ease of cultivation in all soils and under all climates, even by the seaside. If you like yellow flowers, Sunny Boulevard is an ideal small bush to plant in a new garden, even if you're a novice gardener. It excels in all areas of the garden, whether sunny or shaded and impoverished by tree roots. It only requires well-drained soil to thrive in flower beds. In light woodland, for example, it can be planted with symphoricarpos and Lonicera nitida that will cover the ground with dense and ornamental vegetation. In sunnier spots, it can accompany shrubby lavateras, Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana', blue perennial geraniums, Alchemilla mollis, and a dwarf conifer with blue-silver foliage such as Picea pungens Glauca 'Globosa'. Its yellow flowering in summer will not compete with the more pastel spring blooms. Finally, it adapts perfectly to cultivation in a large pot, to the delight of garden enthusiasts without a garden!
