Description

The Abutilon, also known as tree mallow has vine-like leaves and is a small tree native to Chile, reaching a height and width of 3m (9 in 10 ft). Its beautiful dark green foliage resembles that of a vine. In the month of June, the floral buds appear and bloom at the end of the stems, forming large Chinese blue cups throughout the month.

We have been cultivating it for several years and find that its foliage gives it a little exotic touch, which we have taken advantage of by associating it with a Japanese banana tree, Hedychiums, and cannas.

If your climate does not allow for outdoor cultivation, Use a large pot with a diameter of 50 to 70cm (19.7 - 27.6 in) as its growth is very rapid and it needs nourishment. Pruning it vigorously in the spring will maintain its compact and floriferous appearance.

Planting and care

This compact bush grows very quickly in rich and light soil. On the Mediterranean coast and in coastal areas, you can cultivate it in the ground where it will become a small tree. In regions where temperatures below -12°C (10.4°F) are infrequent, it will be happy against a wall protected from cold winds. Its branches will suffer from severe frosts, but they will easily regenerate from the base. In very cold regions grow it in a pot that you can bring indoors during winter to a bright and frost-free room.
