Description
Penstemon Nova® ‘Pearl’ is a floriferous and charming compact perennial with early, abundant and luminous flowering. From early summer through to October, its clusters of pearly white flowers bloom profusely. It will elegantly dress summer borders and potted displays. Hardy down to –15 °C, this variety is easy to grow in well-drained soil, in full sun. It suits both contemporary gardens and more relaxed, naturalistic displays.
Penstemon NOVA® ‘Pearl’ belongs to the Scrophulariaceae or Plantaginaceae family according to new phylogenetic data. It is a herbaceous perennial, selected as part of a breeding programme involving various North American species of Penstemon. This cultivar 'Pearl' is distinguished by its dense, upright habit and an early and continuous flowering from June to October. Its inflorescences are clusters of small, tubular, pearly white flowers, with a slightly iridescent appearance. The lanceolate, dark green leaves are arranged regularly on the stems. The whole forms an elegant clump, measuring about 30 cm tall and 30 cm wide. The foliage is deciduous, absent in winter. Hardy down to –15 °C, this variety prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
Penstemon Nova® ‘Pearl’ finds a place in white gardens and natural-inspired landscapes. Plant at the edge of a border or in a pot on a sunny balcony. This variety, with its understated charm, associates well with Yarrow ‘Moonshine’, with its silvery foliage and pale yellow umbels, Nepeta racemosa ‘Snowflake’, delicate with white flowers, Salvia nemorosa 'Schneehügel', or ornamental Origanum ‘Kent Beauty’, with its trailing habit. Together, they create a luminous, elegant and light display.

Penstemon 'Nova Pearl' is hardy to around -15°C, provided the soil is very well drained in winter and with good protection of the crown under a thick carpet of leaves or straw. For the successful cultivation of hybrid penstemons, the nature of the soil is crucial. They prefer rich soils, not too dry in summer, but very well drained, especially in winter. In overly wet soils, they rot quickly. In cool climates, place the plants in a warm, sunny position, sheltered from cold winds (south or west exposure). In hot climates, choose a cool, partially shaded exposure instead. In very cold regions, it is wise to take stem cuttings in autumn.
It has no specific diseases. This plant requires only minimal maintenance, but when you remove the faded flowers in autumn, you should only slightly shorten the stems, without cutting them back to the ground, especially in regions where the winter is wet. The foliage plays an important role in regulating humidity. Wait until spring is well established (March-April) to shorten the stems whose foliage has been damaged by the cold. If the summer is dry, water regularly to support flowering. In the coldest regions, cover the crown with a glass cover or a cold frame to protect it from severe frost. Divide your penstemons every three or four years to rejuvenate them, but not until spring.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.

In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.

Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
