Description
Nepeta x fassenii 'Alba' is a white-flowered form of catmint. It is a robust, small perennial plant, capable of flowering from spring to autumn. Its slender flowering stems emerge from a cushion of small puckered, almost grey leaves, aromatic when crushed. This Nepeta is a good plant for dry, stony soils and also resists cold. It fits into naturalistic, romantic, Mediterranean gardens, and rock gardens, and is perfect with roses.
Nepeta x faassenii 'Alba' is a bushy and aromatic perennial, resulting from a cross between Nepeta racemosa and N. nepetella, two species native to central and southern Europe belonging to the Lamiaceae family. This Nepeta forms a dense clump with a compact, slightly spreading habit, reaching 35 - 40cm high in flower and spreading 40 to 50cm wide. Its deciduous to semi-evergreen foliage consists of small puckered, greyish green leaves which are soft to the touch and highly aromatic. When crushed, they release a strong scent... especially noticed by cats! Flowering extends from May-June until October, with a possible pause during marked summer drought. The plant produces a multitude of flexible, erect flowering spikes, laden with pure white flowers with slightly downy greenish bracts. This nectar-rich flowering attracts bees, bumblebees and butterflies. By regularly removing faded flowers, you encourage the formation of fresh, dense new foliage, followed by a second wave of flowering.
Just like the more classic blue form, Nepeta x faassenii 'Alba' is an asset in the garden. With its silvery foliage and white flowering, it naturally finds its place in rock gardens, on dry stone walls or steps. It adapts to summer drought by reducing its flowering. It can be used to edge a path or walkway, to fill the base of bush roses, in wild-looking borders with grasses such as Chinese fountain grasses, mixed with Gauras, baby sage, Autumn stonecrops… You can also use it in flower pots on the terrace or balcony.

A true all-terrain plant, Nepeta x faassenii 'Alba' prefers light, well-drained soils, even poor, chalky and stony ones. However, this very hardy plant can die in winter in waterlogged soil. In very clayey soil, it will be necessary to raise the planting, planting this catmint in a rock garden, above a low wall, or in a raised bed where the soil has added draining materials. Plant catmint in full sun.
In heavy soils, dig a hole 3 times larger than the volume of the pot and mix 1/3 gravel and 1/3 sand into your topsoil to lighten it while preventing water stagnation in winter.

In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).

In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
