Planting and care

Hellebores grow in most soils. They thrive in soil that has been deeply worked and mixed with a quantity of organic matter. For fertiliser, use bone meal or another organic fertiliser. In acidic soil, preferably add a bit of lime. Water the young plants well after planting and then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) thick. Regularly remove wilted leaves. For species with leaves emerging from the ground, such as Helleborus orientalis, cut off most of the leaves to highlight the flowers. Make sure not to plant the young plants too close to each other, in order to promote their development.
