Description

The Achillea millefolium 'Desert Eve Red' is part of a new series of compact yarrows, with very vivid colours and remarkably floriferous, equally at ease in flower beds as in flower pots. This robust variety produces large dense umbels, composed of small brick red flowers with golden yellow centres, during a very long period. This exuberant and undemanding perennial is easy to grow in all regions. The flowers are superb in fresh or dried bouquets.

'Desert Eve Red' Yarrow is a deciduous, stoloniferous perennial with an upright clumping habit. It belongs to the asteraceae family. It is a recent cultivar with early, extended, and remarkably coloured flowering. The plant will reach about 40 cm (16in) in all directions, while remaining compact.

The flowering, remarkably long, extends from May-June to September. The dark red hue of the flower heads fades at maturity.. These heads, which appear at the tops of the stems, form flattened, slightly rounded and circular corymbs, about 10 cm (4in) in diameter, composed of numerous small tightly-packed flowers that attract many butterflies. The stem is channelled and villous. The foliage is deciduous or semi-evergreen, of a beautiful dark green, aromatic even when dry, and finely cut into strips, giving the leaves a feathery appearance.

The 'Desert Eve' Yarrows are very well adapted to container gardening, to adorn flower pots throughout the summer season, with very little maintenance. They will also integrate well in a rock garden, at the top of a wall, as a border or on a slope where they will contribute to fixing and protecting against erosion.  These stoloniferous plants can be used as ground cover, planted in groups over large areas. They tolerate root competition from trees, which also allows for their use as ground cover on the edge of woodland. As they are easy to grow and tolerate drought well, they are perfect for dressing the base of shrub roses or for bordering a sunny flower bed. The flowers, which can be picked before they fully open, are ideal for making bouquets.

Planting and care

If you're thinking of planting Achillea millefolium 'Desert Eve', you can do it any time of the year in pots with at least 5 feet of space between each plant. The plant can grow in any type of soil, even limestone, and can handle both dry and moist conditions, provided the soil drains well. It can even grow in clay soils if they are healthy and improved. While it can tolerate partial shade, it prefers full sun. To help the plant grow better in spring, remove faded flowers and cut back all vegetation at the end of the season. You can divide the shrub in spring as well.

If you are growing this plant in a pot, use good quality potting soil for flowering plants. During summer, water the plant regularly, letting the soil dry a bit between waterings. Use flowering plant fertiliser, such as geranium fertiliser, to improve growth. After growing it in a pot, you can plant this plant in the ground or in a flowerbed in March.
