Description

Coleus Mesmerize Chocolate Rose is a non-hardy perennial plant that can be grown as an indoor plant or as an annual in your borders and containers. This variety is spectacular due to its unique foliage: dark purple, marked with bright pink and edged with light green. It will bring colour and uniqueness to your composition. Sow it in spring. It is an easy plant that enjoys moist soil and bright, but not scorching, exposure.

From the Lamiaceae family, like nettle and basil, Coleus, also known as Solenostemon or Plectranthus, are tender shrubby perennials, native to Asia and tropical Africa. They are mainly grown for their decorative foliage, but they also have spike-like flowering during the summer. Their small bilabiate flowers with elongated lower lip are typical of the Lamiaceae family. The flowers are usually removed as soon as they appear to prevent the plants from exhausting themselves in seed production and to maintain generous foliage.

Coleus Mesmerize Chocolate Rose forms a clump of about 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) in all directions in one season. It is mainly its leaves, ovate and velvety in texture, that attract all the attention. The lamina is dark purple, the central vein is strongly marked with bright pink, and the leaf margin is apple green. It's a true festival of colours!

In the garden, place it at the edge of a border or in a beautiful container. Avoid scorching sun that can damage its leaves. They are the stars of mosaic gardening, very popular in parks and public gardens. Pair it with Begonia double Marmorata, with its bicoloured pink and white flowers, or with ferns for a more lush ambiance, such as Polypodium vulgare, with its more neutral green foliage.

Planting and care

You can sow Coleus all year round if you grow them as indoor plants. For your flower beds and pots, sow them in spring, from the month of March, so that they are ready to be planted after the last frost. Use good quality soil, possibly enriched with well decomposed compost. Lightly press down the surface of the seedling tray before sowing your seeds on the surface. Do not cover the seeds with soil. Water lightly. Place your tray in the light, at a temperature of 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). Using a mini greenhouse can speed up seed germination. The substrate should remain moist: spray in the morning and evening.

The seeds will germinate in 15 to 20 days. As soon as the plants have reached a sufficient height to be handled (about 4 to 6 leaves), transplant them into pots. Pinch the tips of the shoots to encourage branching of your coleus.

Plants intended for outdoor planting should be gradually acclimatised to a temperature of 15°C (59°F), ideally 15 days before their final planting. In late May - early June, the outside temperature should be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a slightly sunny location, but not too hot. Add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in) apart.

Water regularly. For potted plants, remember to empty the saucers placed under the pots. In winter, you can store them frost-free in a bright, lightly heated room while reducing watering.

Remove flower spikes as soon as they form to avoid prematurely exhausting the plant.
