Description

The 'Papaye' Dahlia is a summer bulb of the Anemone-flowered Dahlia category. This generous Dahlia offers an abundant and dense flowering from July to the first frost. These double flowers with a diameter of 7 cm (3in) form large yellow pompoms carried by very firm stems. The pompoms are composed of outer petals encircling an imposing heart. These lovely flowers can be cut to create charming fresh bouquets.

The deciduous foliage of the Dahlia is made up of bright green leaves. This 'Papaye' Dahlia can reach a height of 80 cm (32in) at maturity. This non-hardy plant originates from Mexico. It arrived in Europe for its edible roots, which did not find any success. It was admired more for its flowers, which were picked to make bouquets. Neglected, it has made a comeback in gardens and on our home tables.

Enjoyed in bouquets, the 'Papaye' Dahlia can be cultivated in flower beds, borders, as well as in pots and containers on balconies and terraces. It can be found in vegetable gardens and flower bushes. It can be grown as a stand-alone plant. It pairs well with other bulbous plants, whether they are perennial or annual.

Our advice: To make 'Papaye' Dahlia bouquets, pick them early in the morning when the flower is fully open.

Planting and care

The 'Papaye' Dahlia prefers sunny spots in your garden. Place it in a regular, humus-rich, sandy, fairly fertile, and well-drained soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 cm (4in), spaced 40 cm (16in) apart. Planting should take place after the last frost, from May to June. Easy to grow, apply nitrogen-rich fertiliser until the end of June, then switch to potassium-rich fertiliser from July to October. These applications should be done once a week and will help extend the flowering period. After planting, water regularly at the base, preferably in the evening, avoiding wetting the foliage. Watering is essential during hot periods. Remove faded flowers regularly. After flowering, store the bulbs in a dry and well-ventilated area, preferably in sand and protected from rodents. A cellar is an ideal place. Before storing them, leave some leaves in place so that the bulb can replenish its nutrient reserves and wait for these leaves to turn yellow. You can replant them in spring
