Description
Muscari azureum, the azure grape hyacinth, is a small spring bulbous plant prized for its sky-blue flowering, fresh and luminous. Its short spikes bear open bells, marked with fine darker lines, and emit a fragrant scent perceptible in calm weather. Less stocky and less dark than the Armenian grape hyacinth, it forms charming carpets. It is planted in borders, rock gardens, pots, or in naturalised groups at the foot of deciduous shrubs.
This wild species belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is found in botanical literature under the names Bellevalia azurea, Hyacinthella azurea, Pseudomuscari azureum and Muscari praecox. Its common names are azure grape hyacinth and tassel hyacinth. Native to Turkey, this small bulbous plant sends up its leaves and flowers in spring, then enters dormancy before summer, when the foliage yellows. It forms a clump of 10 to 15 cm in height, rarely more. Over time, the bulblets produced around the bulb and spontaneous seedlings allow it to form small colonies. This species naturalises readily in well-drained soils. The leaves are narrow, somewhat fleshy, gutter-shaped, and a medium green with a slight grey tint. They appear before or during flowering, then lengthen after the flowers before disappearing in late spring. The inflorescences are short, dense clusters, borne on a naked stem. Each flower measures only a few millimetres, but together they form a small, clearly visible blue cone. The bells are open at their tips, not constricted into an urn shape as in many other grape hyacinths. Their light blue colour is enhanced by a darker central line and a paler edge. Flowering occurs in March-April in warm regions, rather in April-May elsewhere. It attracts the first pollinating insects in spring. The flowers then give way to small capsules containing the seeds. The name of this species, azureum, comes from Latin and directly refers to the luminous blue of its flowering.

Planting and care
Plant your Muscari azureum as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 8 cm (cover the bulbs with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 8 cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny position for better flowering. Muscari do very well in pots. Ten to twelve bulbs in 15 cm diameter pots, in a mix of 2/3 potting compost and 1/3 sand, will produce very beautiful displays.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
