Description

Eremurus bungei is a perennial with fleshy roots that forms a clump in summer. From June to July, it bears clusters measuring 15 to 30cm (6 to 12in) long, composed of hundreds of small golden yellow flowers, which are brighter than the type. They measure 1 to 2cm (1in) in diameter. The star-shaped flowers open from bottom to top, creating a flowering period that lasts for several weeks. Their colour turns orange-brown as the flower fades.

This variety, native to Central Asia, is the smallest of the eremurus species, reaching a height of 1.5m (5ft). The bulb, formed by large fleshy roots surrounding a bud, resembles an octopus. This tuberous stump measures 20cm (8in) in diameter. It produces green, linear leaves that are 20 to 35cm (8 to 14in) long. The leaves are deciduous and dry up when the first flowers appear, making it ideal for perennial borders that can hide its bare base. However, the border should not be too compact to avoid suffocating this plant. It is a very hardy plant.

This outdoor plant can be found in groups or individually. It enhances homes when placed in a vase. It can also be placed in borders, rockeries, and containers in small gardens. It also looks great on patios.

Planting and care

Plant Eremurus bungei during September-October in a sunny location, sheltered from the wind to prevent damage to the flower stalks. Place it in rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. If the soil is not well-drained enough, you can mix sand with the soil at the time of planting; well-drained soil allows for better root development. Plant the stumps in autumn at a depth of 7cm (3in), no more, as it needs to be quickly warmed up when spring arrives. Winter moisture is fatal to it, so protect it with a covering of compost without touching the collar. The young shoots must be protected with a dry mulch. The plant does not require staking. Eremurus can be attacked by slugs.
