Description

Heuchera 'Velvet Night' is a vigorous heuchera, with a bushy habit that flowers from June to July. It has pure white flowers in small bells arranged along an upright stem. These flowers are accompanied by evergreen foliage in marbled purple-black with silver, offering a strong contrast!

At maturity, Heuchera 'Velvet Night' reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) with a spread of 30-35 cm (12-14in). Once very common in our grandmothers' gardens, it is making a comeback with new cultivars offering a wide range of colours.

Heuchera is found in rock gardens and shady areas, as well as in borders and large beds. It can also be grown in containers on patios. The flowers are good for cutting. The bells add lightness to bouquets.

Heuchera 'Velvet Night' pairs perfectly with grass-like plants such as Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Niger', Carex oshimensis 'Evergold', and Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold'.

Planting and care

Grow Heuchera Velvet Night in full sun or partial shade. If you want to grow it in shade, place it in a cool location. Plant the heuchera in a light, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Good garden soil is perfect. Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the prepared soil, partially fill the hole and place your plant (after removing the pot) so that the top of the plant's root ball is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Adding a slow-release fertilizer e.g. bonemeal will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firmly tamp down the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. In late winter, heucheras renew their foliage, so we recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January or February. The woody stump tends to emerge from the ground, so apply mulch every year. If necessary, lift and replant clumps from September to October, ensuring the collar is level with the ground, or replace the plants.
