Description

Heuchera americana 'Dale's Strain' is a botanical variety, characterised by its hardiness and vigour, particularly in the face of temporary droughts and high temperatures. During the months of May and June, small cream-white bell-shaped flowers emerge along an upright stem, forming feathery spikes that can reach a height of 50 cm (20 in).

Its evergreen foliage, dark green with bluish reflections veined in black, measures up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter. It has excellent hardiness (down to -20 °C (-4 °F)). Its spreading habit makes it an ideal ground cover for shade.

Thanks to its bell-shaped flowers, the Dale's Strain variety is perfect for cut flowers and adds lightness to bouquets. It pairs beautifully with shade-loving perennials such as Hosta 'Halcyon', Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', Arrhenaterum bulbosum 'Variegatum', Holcus mollis 'Variegatus', or epimediums.

Planting and care

Place your heuchera in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and thrives in good garden soil. Therefore, plant it in a light and rich, moist but well-drained soil. Reserve a depth of 20 cm (8 in). Space the heucheras 30 cm (12 in) apart. During winter, heucheras renew their foliage, so it is best to cut back the leaves from the previous year, during January to February. Also, the roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or potentially lift and replant in September and October, with the collar placed just at ground level. Be aware of leaf eelworms, vine weevils, and gall mites, as they can cause viruses that may pose a problem.
