Description

The 'Spellbound' Heuchera is a magnificent variety of heuchera, with a dense habit, that displays large leaves in shades of silver, pink, purple, and violet. This perennial plant forms a ground-covering clump that changes colour throughout the seasons and depending on the exposure: the violet, purple, and pink tones are more pronounced in spring and autumn, while silver dominates if the plant is positioned in shade. The foliage is adorned with a discreet yellow-green summer flowering and remains decorative in winter. This enchanting heuchera brings an incredible touch of colour to flower beds, borders, and containers, preferably in partial shade or even shade.

In recent years, heucheras have become essential plants in our gardens. Their evergreen foliage, available in multiple shades, brightens up flower beds brilliantly. These plants from the Saxifragaceae family make wonderful borders for flower beds. They also perform very well in containers, making them suitable for even modest-sized terraces.

The 'Spellbound' heuchera reaches approximately 25 cm (10in) in height and 40 cm (16in) in width, spreading by forming several dense clumps from its stump. The plant flowers in summer, from June to August depending on the climate, but its flowering is not a major feature. Fine flower stalks emerge from the foliage, with a reddish-violet colour, bearing tiny pale yellow-green bells. The foliage, consisting of very large, deeply lobed and veined leaves, whose colour evolves, is a constant delight. The pure silver leaves are traversed by almost black veins and develop pink, purple, to violet reflections as temperatures drop. The cup-shaped leaves reveal their beautiful violet undersides.

The 'Spellbound' Heuchera, like many heucheras, is not very demanding in terms of soil type, as long as it is well-drained and not too dry. It appreciates partial or full shade, but still needs some light, at least in the morning, to express its beautiful colours. It will, however, scorch if exposed to full sun. Once established, it can tolerate temporary droughts. Plant this heuchera in large numbers to achieve a spectacular and extensive ground-covering effect, or you can also combine it with other varieties with comparable colours such as 'Amethyst Myst' or 'Silver Scrolls'. In shade, its silver foliage will enhance the dark foliage of the Black Mondo Grass for example. Finally, it can create a beautiful colour scheme with shrubs such as the Burgundy Candy Physocarpus for example.

Planting and care

For your 'Spellbound' heuchera, prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially refill the hole and place your seedling (after removing the pot) so that the top of the plant's root ball is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a base fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Heucheras renew their foliage at the end of winter, so we recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January, February.
