Moroccan mints are perennial aromatic plants from the spearmint group, renowned for their fresh, sweet and very refreshing fragrance. They can be grown in the vegetable garden or in a herb bed. Growing them in pots helps keep their vigour under control. The leaves can be harvested throughout the season to prepare mint tea, flavour an infusion, enhance a tabbouleh, a fruit salad, a yoghurt sauce or a grilled dish.
Moroccan mint, Mentha spicata ‘Nannah’, is the benchmark in this category: its puckered, light green leaves offer a distinct aroma, appreciated in hot drinks or fresh recipes. It is close to spearmint, Mentha spicata, which is more classic but just as useful in cooking. Organic Algerian mint has a spicier flavour, interesting for variation. All thrive in fertile soil that stays moist, in full sun or partial shade depending on the climate.
