Description

Begonia 'Superba Salmon' is a tuberous begonia prized for its large double flowers, shaped like roses, in a warm palette of orange and salmon tones. It is a small, compact plant that blooms continuously from early summer to autumn, ideal for decorating pots and partially shaded borders. Grow in rich compost, with regular watering, and overwinter its tubers in a sheltered place.

Begonia x tuberhybrida belongs to the Begoniaceae family and includes tuberous hybrids derived from Andean species such as Begonia boliviensis, B. pearcei or B. veitchii. The Superba series brings together floriferous, compact F1 hybrids with large double flowers, more regular and more numerous than in older tuberous begonias.
'Superba Salmon' is a non-hardy perennial, grown as an annual in open ground, whose tubers can be kept dry and frost-free to make it rebloom for several years. The plant has an upright then slightly trailing habit, reaching 30 to 40 cm in height and 25 to 30 cm in width. The stems are fleshy, brittle, light green, sometimes tinged with red. The asymmetrical, 8 to 12 cm long, medium to dark green, glossy, finely toothed leaves are often slightly darker or bronze at the edges and reddish on the underside along the veins. Flowering begins in late May or early June and continues until October. The double, camellia-type male flowers are 10-15 cm in diameter, with numerous rounded, overlapping petals, in a gradient of salmon, apricot and coral, more intense in the centre and lighter on the periphery. The female flowers are simpler.

A reliable choice for summer and autumn displays! In partial shade, in a border, you can pair begonia 'Superba Salmon' with dwarf hostas, heuchera 'Marmalade' or 'Caribbean Sea' and small Hart's Tongue Ferns. In a large planter, mix different Superba varieties (white, yellow, red) to decorate your balcony or terrace.

In many parks and gardens in our towns, Superba tuberous begonias have long been used to create long-lasting flowering borders in summer. They are reliable and generous plants provided watering and feeding are well managed.

Planting and care

Plant your Superba Salmon begonias in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light and moist soil, rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soil; lighten it if necessary with sand and compost. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot of about twenty centimetres, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Plant the begonia with the hollow side facing upwards, and cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them as early as February, in sheltered pots, moving them outside in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers. Dig up the tubers before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry and cool place, during the winter.
