Marvellous. Planted in a container in the shade. It steals the show from all its fellow potted plants!

Description

Heuchera 'Caribbean Sea' is a beautiful evergreen perennial that forms a ground cover clump. Its coppery orange foliage takes on marbled shades over time. It brightens up flower beds in light sun, partial shade, or even full shade. It produces white flower spikes in summer, which further enhances its appeal.

In recent years, heucheras have become essential plants in our gardens. Their evergreen foliage, available in multiple shades, adds brilliance to flower beds. These plants from the Saxifragaceae family make fantastic border plants. They also perform very well in pots, making them suitable for even small terraces. Heuchera 'Caribbean Sea' reaches approximately 30 cm (12 in) in height and 40 cm (16 in) in width, and its delicate inflorescences rise above its lobed foliage. The foliage, which evolves into warm orange tones over the months, is a source of constant enchantment.

Heuchera 'Caribbean Sea', like many heucheras, is not very demanding when it comes to soil type, as long as it is well drained. In heavy soil, it is preferable to amend the planting soil with sand or well-decomposed compost. It prefers partial shade or shade but still needs some light, at least in the morning, to express its beautiful colours. On the other hand, it will scorch if exposed to full sun. Once established, it can tolerate occasional droughts.

You can also easily propagate it by cuttings by taking a section of its creeping stems, which will allow you to create an entire border in a few years. This is also a way to rejuvenate the clump, which sometimes tends to thin out after 3 to 5 years of growth.

Plant this heuchera in abundance to achieve a spectacular and effective ground cover, or you can also combine it with other varieties with similar colours such as the famous 'Caramel' or 'Pinot Gris' varieties. On the other hand, you can create contrasts with dark heucheras like 'Palace Purple'. In shade, its bright foliage will highlight the dark foliage of ferns (Dryopteris, Polystichum), Liriopes, or Ophiopogons. Lastly, it can provide a burst of colour alongside shrubs such as the 'Amber Jubilee' Physocarpus, which also has a flamboyant orange shade.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm (8 in x 8 in x 8 in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially refill the hole, and place your bucket (after removing the pot) so that the top of the root ball of your plant is covered with 3 cm (1 in) of soil. Adding a base fertiliser (dried blood or crushed horn) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage the establishment of your plant. In late winter, heucheras renew their foliage. We recommend cutting back the leaves from the previous year, in January or February.
