Description

Ruby Kiss® rose produces large, very double blooms in a rich ruby red. They open into deep cups filled with tightly packed petals, reminiscent of old-fashioned roses. The flowers exude a light fragrance. Carried on straight, sturdy stems, they shine in the garden and are perfect for making bouquets. Repeat flowering and with remarkably healthy foliage, this rose with a narrow habit fits easily into a rose bed or a bed of tall perennials.

Ruby Kiss® belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a shrub resulting from complex horticultural crosses, like other modern large-flowered roses. Its foliage is deciduous in most regions, but may persist partly during mild winters. This variety was bred in Germany by W. Kordes’ Söhne and marketed in 2023 under the cultivar name 'KORpucobel'. It belongs to the Eleganza Antique® collection, which brings together hybrid teas with very double flowers reminiscent of old-fashioned roses. In horticultural classification, Ruby Kiss® belongs among the large-flowered bush roses. The bush develops firm, straight, well-branched branches. Its growth remains narrow, reaching approximately 1 m in height and 50 cm in spread at maturity. In spring, new shoots emerge from the base and the main branches, then become woody over the course of the season. They bear dense foliage made up of dark green leaflets with a glossy surface. Its good health is one of Ruby Kiss®'s important qualities. It shows notably low susceptibility to black spot and powdery mildew, two common diseases among hybrid teas. From June to October, flowering is renewed in waves; however, it fades during very hot, dry periods. The flowers measure 8 to 10 cm in diameter. Very double, they open into deep cups, revealing a tightly packed arrangement of dark ruby-red petals with a slight wine-red hue. Once well rooted, this rose tolerates temperatures below –15 °C, provided it is planted in soil that does not retain excessive water in winter.

Place this bush in a sunny bed, along a path or among flowers grown for bouquets. Its narrow habit allows it to be planted in groups of three, spaced 45 to 50 cm apart, to form a fuller group. Pair it with roses 'Annapurna', pure white, and 'Burgundy Ice', in purple shaded with violet, as well as tree mallow 'Barnsley Baby', Nepeta 'Junior Walker' and the small Alchemilla erythropoda. White, pale pink, purple, lavender blue and chartreuse green highlight the rich red of Ruby Kiss®'s beautiful roses.

Planting and care

Rose Ruby Kiss® is best planted in autumn or at the end of winter, outside periods of frost and when the soil is not waterlogged. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position and deep, fertile, well-drained soil that remains slightly moist during flowering. After planting, water regularly for the first two years, then during dry spells, and spread a mulch without covering the graft union. Applying well-rotted compost in spring supports growth and repeat flowering. Its healthy foliage requires little treatment in a well-ventilated position.

Roses are often marked, or look unattractive at the end of summer, but this does not affect their development. These marks are not harmful to the rose; they are a natural phenomenon. Follow all our advice to remedy the problem and read our article: Help: my roses have marks on their leaves

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning bush roses is only necessary after 1 or 2 years, when the rose is growing vigorously. Do not prune it too low. Shorten the shoots to two or three eyes above ground level (at the lowest), in late winter, before the buds break but after the hard frosts. Choose an outward-facing eye for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Make sloping cuts above an eye. As flowering progresses, remove the spent flowers to stimulate the opening of other buds.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March
Soil moisture Moist soil

Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
