Description

The 'Burgundy Ice' rosebush, classified among modern hybrid roses, is a natural mutation of the excellent variety 'Fairy Snow', fortuitously discovered by an amateur gardener in Tasmania. Awarded at the Courson Merits in 2007, it is a version with extraordinarily purple flowers, shaded with violet, whose velvety texture is revealed in the sun. The bush it forms is endowed with the same exceptional qualities: an almost permanent flowering, a flexible habit, and excellent resistance to bad weather. Its light roses allow for beautiful bouquets or remarkable combinations with white roses.

The 'Burgundy Ice' rosebush was obtained in 2005 by Prophyl. This modern hybrid demonstrates a beautiful vigour, which allows it to form a very beautiful bush 1m (3ft) to 1.50m (5ft) high, with a width of 90 cm (35in) to 1m (3ft). The plant shows vigorous, bushy growth and a wide, upright habit. Its flowering is inexhaustible. It produces medium-sized flowers, 6 cm (2in) wide, double, with a rich purple colour and nuances. They are full and bloom in prodigious bouquets, but do not emit a strong fragrance, rather a light one. The foliage, elegant, deciduous to semi-evergreen, medium green, sometimes tends to thin out in summer. Well-amended soil will allow the fortified bush to bear its flowers without exhausting itself.

The 'Burgundy Ice' rosebush creates a sensation in flower hedges and mass plantings, especially when its roses are combined with white flowers. The 'Iceberg' roses, as well as 'Winchester Cathedral', make perfect companions. It can also be associated with white perennials such as delphiniums, foxgloves or bellflowers, the light blue flowers of Perovskia or Nepeta, or even the sulfur yellow to acid green foliage of alchemillas, euphorbias or thalictrums. Its flowers, picked before they fully open, hold up very well in bouquets.

Planting and care

To plant your potted rose, work the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in), breaking up the soil well and adding a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, and cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to apply a special rose fertiliser to stimulate plant flowering. To achieve abundant flowering in your roses, regularly bend and tie the branches. Each bend will result in lateral growth that ends with a bouquet of flowers. Do not hesitate to use this technique, you will be rewarded.
