Description
The Annapurna Rose, named after the most dangerous peak in the Himalayas, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful white roses. It is a majestic plant, with large modern roses of pure white, sparkling like snow, and powerfully scented. They smell of violets and fade with great elegance, in an immaculate white. Its fragrant flowers, bushy habit, vigour and long flowering period have earned it 12 major awards in international competitions. A highly desirable variety, truly essential in the garden and in bouquets.
The Annapurna Rose is a wonderful French creation by François Dorieux, born with the new millennium. This modern rose is classified as a Hybrid Tea, and remains to this day one of the best modern varieties with large white flowers. The plant forms a vigorous and upright bush, with fast growth. It will reach an average height of about 90 cm (35in) to 1 m (3ft), with a spread of 70 cm (28in). From May-June until late in the season, on healthy dark green foliage with a matte finish, elongated and turbinate buds appear in successive waves, opening into fully bloomed roses with a diameter of 9 cm (4in), whose imperfect shape at full bloom somewhat resembles that of English roses. They are made up of more than 40 thick and waxy white petals, and are borne singly on long sturdy stems. Their very pronounced fragrance is remarkable and unique. A very hardy variety that is also suitable for hot regions.
This modern Annapurna rose, with the purity of its large white flowers and its beautiful floribundity, will find its place in the garden in a large rose bed, where it will illuminate, or as a standalone specimen in a well-maintained garden. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and all climates, tolerating both rain and heat, which allows it to be welcomed without reservation from the north to the south of our region, even at altitude. It pairs perfectly with pale pink roses ('Prince Jardinier', 'Princesse Charlène de Monaco', 'William Morris') and pretty plants that are very easy to grow, such as perennial geraniums, bellflowers, catmints or snapdragons... Its flowers can be used to create sumptuous bouquets that will delicately perfume the home.
Dorieux creation from 2000.

Planting and care
To plant your rose, work the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in), crumble the soil well and place a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, freed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
