The only plant out of 6 (2 orders of 3 plants) received in very good condition and healthy. It gave me 2 flowers so I was able to see a true dark blue. Unfortunately, this time, the pot was so firmly attached with huge staples that it was torn and was difficult for me to remove from the box. I was afraid of damaging the foliage and the roots...

Description

The Salvia chamaedryoides var. isochroma is a lovely small shrub sage native to Mexico and Texas nicknamed Germander Sage. It is notable for its persistent silvery-grey foliage and stunning, vibrant blue flowering. Its delicate flower spikes appear from spring to autumn, depending on the climate. It is a sun-loving sage that thrives in well-drained, light soil that is dry to very dry in summer. Perfect for water-wise gardens, it can be showcased with other drought-tolerant plants in a border, raised bed, rock garden, or slope...

The Salvia chamaedryoides var. isochroma, recently renamed Salvia isochroma, is native to mountainous areas of Texas and northern Mexico. It is highly drought-tolerant, but its hardiness is limited: it will perish below -9 °C. Like all other sages, it belongs to the large family of Lamiaceae or labiates. This botanical species is sometimes sold under Salvia 'Silver Leaves' horticultural name.

It is a shrubby species with slightly stoloniferous roots, forming a rounded, dense, low, and wide clump over time. Eventually, the bush reaches 35 to 45 cm with a 50 to 60 cm spread. Its branched stems bear tiny, blue-grey, fuzzy oval leaves that lighten in summer due to heat and drought. When crushed, they release a pleasant, fruity and tangy scent. The foliage is evergreen in winter. The plant adjusts its flowering period to the climate. If the soil does not dry out too much between June and August, it blooms abundantly in successive waves. Otherwise, this sage flowers in May and again in October, especially in the Mediterranean region. The slender flower stems bear tiny bilabiate flowers. Their bright blue colour perfectly complements the silver foliage. Honey-producing and nectariferous, they are highly prized by butterflies and bees.

Salvia isochroma thrives in rock gardens or rocky beds in regions where winter is neither too harsh nor too wet. It pairs well with other small shrubs of the Mediterranean scrubland, such as lavender, rockroses, thymes, and teucriums. It also pairs well with very understated perennials and annuals such as catmints, Erigeron karvinskianus, Stipa tenuifolia, Lychnis coronaria, cornflowers, and Californian poppies. It also pairs well with pink or red shrubby sages.

With over 900 species of annuals, perennials, and shrubs distributed worldwide, except in icy regions and tropical forests, the genus Salvia is the most diverse in the Lamiaceae family. The name Salvia, dating back to Roman times, derives from the Latin salvus, "healthy", which refers to the medicinal properties of common sage.

Planting and care

Plant the Salvia isochroma in a well-drained, light, even rocky and poor soil that does not retain moisture in winter. A sandy soil with a tendency towards limestone is ideal. Under these conditions, this plant can withstand short frosts of around -9°C. Choose a very sunny exposure. It is a relatively easy floriferous plant to grow, ideal in a Mediterranean garden without watering. Limestone is excellently tolerated.

Prune in spring, from late March to April, depending on the region, never in autumn. The stems remaining on the plant will protect it from winter cold. When you notice that your sage is starting to grow, you should prune it.
