Description

The Cool Wave® 'Golden Yellow' Pansy is a hybrid variety of Viola x wittrockiana, belonging to a series of very low-growing plants with a dense habit, offering brightly coloured flowers for a very long period, even in winter and despite inclement weather. It is a biennial plant that flowers from October to April, with a trailing habit that is particularly suitable for hanging baskets, but also for use as ground cover in flower beds. Its flowers, larger than those of other cultivars in the same series, are a bright yellow. Perfect for adding vibrancy to any floral arrangement and brightening up the shortest days of the year.

Garden pansies, sometimes called giant Swiss pansies, are actually hybrids grouped under Viola x wittrockiana. They belong to the viola family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically perennial but short-lived.

The Cool Wave® series, developed in the USA, brings together a collection of pansies that are very low-growing. They have an excellent branching habit and quickly form a clump that can reach a height of 20 cm (7.9 in) and a width of 30 to 40 cm (15.7 in). Their growth can be enhanced with a fertiliser application every 15 days. They have a remarkable show of flowers from autumn to spring. The 'Golden Yellow' selection has numerous small, serrated, elliptical leaves of medium green colour. Above these leaves bloom countless medium-sized flowers (over 5 cm / 2 in wide) with five rounded, slightly overlapping  petals. They have a bright, solid yellow color.

When planted in summer, they will bloom from autumn onwards. Vigorous, these pansies withstand unfavourable weather conditions and tolerate periods of frost, even the most severe. You will see them slump and revive as temperatures soften. They will accompany you throughout the winter, becoming more discreet, and continue to bloom in spring.

If you love them out in the garden they will also be much appreciated in windowboxes, for enjoying while you keep warm inside. Plant alongside primroses, wallflowers, muscari, daisies, and even grasses like Japanese sedge for a graphic effect in a contemporary spirit, or combine with heucheras and tulips. The blue-green color of glaucous fescues also enhances them well. Their colours go well with orange and blue, for a bohemian feel.

Pansy petals are edible, and their colours will bring a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. For this purpose, consider growing them as you would your vegetables - in the most natural way possible.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

The plugs of Cool Wave® 'Golden Yellow' pansies should be transplanted directly into pots or planters as soon as they are received. Monitor moisture levels and regularly apply fertiliser (about twice a month).

If you want to plant them in the ground, transplant them first into small pots. Keep an eye on the watering but do not over-soak the soil. No need to keep them in a greenhouse - they will be fine as long as not positioned at risk of scorching. After a good month, you can transplant them directly into their final position.

Remove faded flowers as they appear to stimulate the growth of new buds.
