Description

Viola 'F1 Sorbet Black Delight' is an astonishing variety of horned violet, offering fascinating small flowers of a very deep velvety black, illuminated by a tiny golden heart. This robust and compact plant offers early and generous flowering over many months. It accompanies spring bulbs and blooms at the base of asters, while in rockeries it quickly spreads its dark and evergreen carpet. It allows for charming borders and opulent pots. This biennial is cultivated in humus-rich soil, in partial shade or dappled sunlight.

Belonging to the violet family, the horned violet grows wild in the Pyrenees and is a low perennial plant that has given rise to numerous hybrids. Often crossed with Viola tricolor, their most famous descendants are horticultural pansies. The 'Sorbet Black Delight' variety is a herbaceous creeping plant, 10 to 15 cm (5.9 in) tall when in bloom, with persistent dark green, ovate and crenate leaves, forming a spreading tuft. It is covered with flowers from spring to autumn. Its deep velvety black flowers are punctuated by a tiny white and bright yellow heart. They resemble those of small pansies but their petals are arranged differently. The two upper ones are upright, the other three are inclined downwards. The plant spreads quite rapidly thanks to its rhizomes and also self-seeds easily in the garden, not always faithfully.

Horned violets are intended for low flowering beds and borders, but also for pots and balconies, where they combine well with other spring and summer flowering plants (Forget-me-nots, Dwarf Daffodils, Daisies, Primroses, Botanical Tulips, summer and autumn asters...). The flowers of horned violets are edible, so do not hesitate to decorate your plates with a few, or use in salads for a touch of colour.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

Horned violets appreciate a light, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil as they do not like excessive moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add some sand to improve drainage.

Plant horned violets in a sunny but not scorching site or under light shade.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are greedy plants. Feed them with liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing season. Water regularly but not excessively. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
