Description

This Alstroemeria Summer Paradise Holiday Valley is a new variety of Peruvian Lily with red-orange flowers that enriches the Summer Paradise series with a vibrant red-orange colour under the summer sun. Particularly well adapted to outdoor cultivation, in all climates, it is hardy up to -15°C. With many flowers, the plant blooms from June to October. Its exotic-looking lily flowers are spotted with yellow and streaked with purple at the throat. This superb perennial is as beautiful in the garden as it is in containers or bouquets.

The Alstroemeria 'Holiday Valley' is a recent Dutch variety, resulting from the hybridization of several tuberous species native to South America, particularly the Chilean Andes. These high-altitude plants belonging to the Alstroemeriaceae family are more or less hardy, appreciate moist, well-drained soils, in lightly wooded and cool areas. Slow to establish, they can disappear or... become invasive! Quirky and fantastic plants, very sensitive to growing conditions, they are "indestructible" once you have found the right spot for them. 'Holiday Valley', like its siblings in the Summer Paradise series, surprises with its hardiness and floribundity. The plant quickly forms clumps of sturdy leafy stems that can reach 70 cm (28in) in height when in bloom, with a spread of 50 cm (20in). Flowering takes place from June to October-November. The wide-open flowers are gathered in terminal umbels. They consist of 3 small central petals, red-orange with yellow markings towards the base, streaked with brown-purple, surrounded by 3 larger petals of the same red-orange colour. Each plant can produce at least 30 flowers. The foliage is arranged on the upper part of the stems. The leaves of this variety are an elegant dark green colour. The foliage and stems disappear in winter, leaving only the trailing stump with fleshy roots underground. The stump is sensitive to the shock of transplantation, especially in older plants.

The Alstroemeria 'Holiday Valley' is a superb variety for the garden. This exceptional perennial, when mature, provides a magnificent spectacle in borders or on a partially shaded slope. This plant pairs well, for example, with other varieties from the Summer Paradise series (Summer Break, Indian Summer, Summertime...), orange-flowered shrubby salvias, or grasses; Stipa, small Miscanthus, or Muhlenbergia capillaris will accompany its autumn colours with their foliage and magnificent late-season blooms. Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, with intensely blue flowers and red foliage in October, can also be planted alongside. A marvel! Pot cultivation is also possible.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Alstroemerias should be planted in spring, choosing a sunny or semi-shade location, in a light, well-drained, well-prepared soil, preferably sandy or loamy and slightly acidic to neutral, and not too fertile. While they appreciate moistre to support their flowering, they adapt quite well to dry soils in summer.  These plants are quite hardy if the soil does not remain waterlogged in winter. The stump can be protected with a thick mulch of leaves or fern fronds in autumn. Slugs (and turtles) love young shoots; make sure to protect them.
