Description

The Dahlia ‘Melody Allegro’, a decorative type but of small stature, is particularly suited to bedding borders and flowering containers. Its perfectly formed, almost spherical flowers offer a colour palette that varies depending on the light and growing conditions. The plant flowers all summer and until the end of the season.

From a botanical perspective, the dahlia belongs to the Asteraceae family and originates from Mexico and Central America. It is characterised by tuberous roots that store reserves.
The variety ‘Melody Allegro’ is a non-hardy tuberous plant that must be lifted or protected from frost. It belongs to the decorative horticultural group, characterised by double inflorescences composed of wide, shiny "petals" or ligules. 'Melody Allegro' reaches an average height of 55 cm with a similar spread. The flowers, with a diameter of 10-12 cm, have a rounded shape, with slightly incurved petals. They display shades of salmon, pink, orange, with a yellow or lilac centre. The foliage is medium green, and the rigid stems support the flowering well. The flowering period extends from July until the frosts, even into November depending on the climate. To encourage repeat flowering, regularly deadhead spent flowers.

With its refined yet dynamic appearance, the Dahlia ‘Melody Allegro’ is perfect for adding beautiful texture to a border or a cut flower arrangement. Contemporary and romantic, it pairs as well with Echinacea 'Milkshake' as with a small ornamental grass such as Stipa pennata. In a dahlia display, varieties like 'Bishop of Llandaff' with purple leaves or 'Happy Single Flame' with single red flowers allow for variation in form and height.

In the past, dahlias were widely used in kitchen gardens for their cut flowers. Today, they are making a strong comeback in modern borders thanks to their rich palette and long-lasting flowering.

Planting and care

The Dahlia ‘Melody Allegro’ is easy to to grow in all regions. For generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubercles in a full sun position after the last frosts; rich, cool, well-drained soils are perfect. Stagnant moisture, however, would encourage the tubercles to rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to backfill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water thoroughly once and then repeat this watering regularly for the first 6 weeks to help root establishment.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold and must be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the leaf, which is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the leaf to dry so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic.
In southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a carpet of leaves or straw as protection.
