Description

Tulipa aucheriana is undoubtedly one of the smallest tulips, but certainly not the least beautiful! Among its glaucous (green-blue) leaves, stand out magnificent star-shaped flowers of amethyst pink with a bright yellow centre.

This hardy tulip is a botanical species, meaning that it exists in its natural state. It is actually native to the mountains of Iran where it thrives in rocky and well-draining areas. It blooms a bit later than other tulips.

The bulbs of Tulipa aucheriana can be planted in rockeries or flower beds, but preferably at the edge, due to the small size of the plant. You can also put them in pots and containers if they are deep enough.

Planting and care

Plant your Tulipa aucheriana bulbs as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 8cm (3in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height in soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. Flower Carpet Tip You can create beautiful flower spaces around the house, in flower beds, around trees, or in wild spaces. It is an economical and sustainable solution, provided you follow a few principles: 1) This is a planting that should be left in place. 2) Choose the varieties carefully according to the specific research area. 3) A period of rest is essential after flowering for the bulbs to regenerate. Let the foliage turn yellow and dry before cutting it. 4) Organic fertilizer should be spread once a year in autumn.
