Description

Amaryllis Lima, also known as Hippeastrum Cybister, has spectacular flowering from December to March.

Its flowers are star-shaped, with long and narrow petals measuring 10 cm (4in). The flowers are green and burgundy in colour. In the centre of the flower, there are long stamens that sometimes exceed the length of the petals. 4 to 6 flowers are perched on sturdy stems.

Amaryllis Lima develops its foliage after flowering. This indoor bulb can reach 50 cm (20in). Cultivate it in a pot. You can also place it against a well-exposed wall in your garden, sheltered from cold winds, bearing in mind that the Amaryllis cannot tolerate frost. When cut, the flowers make beautiful bouquets.

Planting and care

Amaryllis Lima thrives in full sun or partial shade in any moist soil. Indoors, place it in bright light. For pot cultivation, provide 2 cm (1in) around the bulb and use a heavy pot to prevent it from tipping under the weight of the amaryllis, which tends to lean towards the sun. Use a light, well-drained, neutral or slightly acidic potting soil. In a pot, leave half of the bulb above the soil to prevent the neck from staying wet and rotting due to watering. Additionally, this allows more room for the soil. Plant your Amaryllis from October to January, depending on the desired flowering period, keeping in mind that it takes 6 weeks between planting and flowering. After flowering, cut the flowers while allowing the foliage to grow. At the end of summer, let the soil dry out and trim the dry leaves. 6 weeks later, repot the bulb in fresh potting soil.
