Description

Hydrangea paniculata 'Pinky Winky' is a beautiful bush hydrangea, with flowers measuring 25cm (9.8in) long, white when they bloom and gradually turning into dark pink and lilac shades.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Pinky Winky' is a very recent cultivar, a distant descendant of the Hydrangea paniculata species, native to the eastern temperate regions of China and Japan. It has inherited the good hardiness (down to at least -20°C) and its adaptation to sunlight and relative drought, while showing more tolerance towards calcareous soils than traditional Hortensia macrophylla.

This upright and branching bush will reach a height of 2 to 3m (6 to 10ft) and a width of 2m (7 to 9ft), with rapid growth. Its flowering begins at the end of July or the beginning of August. Creamy white at first, its slender panicles, measuring 20-25cm (7.9 - 9.8in) in length, are composed solely of sterile florets, quickly turning pink. The duo of colours remains decorative for a long time, then completely turns to a Thyrian pink in early autumn. Its sturdy branches easily support the weight of the flowers. They are covered with beautiful deciduous foliage, dark green, ovate, highly veined, and take on magnificent autumnal hues. This exceptional variety does not require any pruning.

Planting and care

This hydrangea requires a sunny location to obtain autumn colourations and a humus-bearing, neutral to acidic soil. At planting, install it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertilizer (horn or dehydrated blood) will promote the growth of your plant and nourish it without the risk of burn. If your soil tends to be dry, mix our water retainer, stockosorb, with the soil when filling the planting hole and provide a watering basin on the surface. At the end of summer, we advise you not to cut the dry umbels that will protect the terminal shoots of the branches in winter. You can cut all the dry flowers at the end of February or at the first sunny days. Their spring vegetation is quite late. Hydrangea paniculata: These shrubby hydrangeas with elongated inflorescences are drought-resistant and easily establish even in non-acidic soil. They bloom generously from June until the first frost. Planted in the sun, their inflorescences colour in autumn.
