Description
L’Hydrangea paniculata PINKY WINKY® ‘DVPPinky’ est reconnaissable à ses grandes panicules dressées, dont la couleur évolue du blanc au rose soutenu. Les fleurs situées à la base rosissent tandis que l’extrémité reste blanche, créant un effet bicolore particulièrement marqué en fin d’été. Ses tiges solides, colorées de rouge pourpré lorsqu’elles sont jeunes, portent la floraison sans s’affaisser. Fiable, florifère et facile à cultiver, cet hortensia paniculé a reçu l’Award of Garden Merit de la Royal Horticultural Society en 2008, une distinction qui sera confirmée en 2025.
Le nom officiel de ce cultivar est ‘DVPPinky’, PINKY WINKY® étant son appellation commerciale. Cet arbuste appartient à la famille des Hydrangéacées. L’espèce botanique Hydrangea paniculata pousse naturellement en Chine centrale et méridionale, au Japon, à Taïwan, dans les îles Kouriles et jusqu’à Sakhaline. ‘DVPPinky’ a été obtenu en Belgique par Johan Van Huylenbroeck, au centre de recherche agronomique de Melle. C'est un descendant de l’hortensia ‘Pink Diamond’. La plante a été sélectionnée en 1999, puis diffusée dans le commerce horticole au début des années 2000. Cet arbuste caduc montre un port dressé, touffu et légèrement étalé. Il atteint 1,50 à 2 m de hauteur pour une envergure comparable, selon la taille pratiquée et la richesse du sol. Sa croissance est assez rapide. Ses tiges rouge pourpré deviennent brunes avec l’âge. Elles portent des feuilles ovales à elliptiques, finement dentées, vert clair à vert moyen. Le feuillage jaunit avant de tomber en automne. Les premières panicules apparaissent à la fin du mois de juillet ou au début du mois d’août. Longues de 20 à 30 cm, elles sont coniques, effilées et composées de petites fleurs fertiles mêlées à des fleurs stériles plus voyantes. D’abord vert pâle puis blanches, celles-ci prennent progressivement des tons rose vif à rose pourpré. Comme la panicule continue de s’allonger pendant que sa base se colore, plusieurs nuances cohabitent sur la même inflorescence. Les nuits plus fraîches de la fin de l’été intensifient les teintes roses. Les fleurs dégagent un léger parfum épicé et attirent les insectes pollinisateurs. Elles restent décoratives jusqu’en octobre, puis sèchent sur l’arbuste. Cet hortensia fleurit sur les pousses de l’année et résiste à des températures proches de –25 °C.
Cet hortensia paniculé PINKY WINKY® s’utilise dans une haie libre, un massif arbustif ou en sujet isolé. Son allure généreuse trouve naturellement sa place dans les jardins à l’anglaise et les jardins de curé. Il peut être associé à l’Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snowflake’, au Viburnum plicatum ‘Kilimandjaro Sunrise’, à l’Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’ et au Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice’. On peut le planter dans les jardins du littoral s'il n’est pas directement exposé aux embruns et aux vents desséchants. Ses panicules se coupent à différents stades de coloration et s’utilisent dans les bouquets frais ou secs, avec des roses anglaises, des dahlias décoratifs ou des branches garnies de feuillages et de fruits décoratifs.

The Hydrangea paniculata PINKY WINKY® ‘DVPPinky’ is best planted in September or October, or in early spring in cold regions. It flowers in full sun if the soil remains slightly moist at all times; light partial shade is preferable in regions with hot summers. This hydrangea grows in a deep, humus-bearing, fertile and well-drained soil, acid, neutral or slightly calcareous. Very chalky soil is not suitable for it. Regular watering is necessary during the first two years and in dry periods. To keep a little moisture at the base of this shrub, it is useful to apply an organic mulch before summer.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
