Description
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Groundbreaker Greeny’ is a paniculate dwarf hydrangea with a spreading habit, ideal as a groundcover. This variety works well in borders, in flowering pots or as a table centrepiece. From July until autumn, its vegetation disappears under conical, fluffy inflorescences of a soft, fresh green.
Hydrangea paniculata, also called Mountain Hydrangea, is a particularly hardy species belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, native to deciduous forests of China and Japan.
Bred from the Groundbreaker® series developed by Living Creations BV, ‘Greeny’ (‘LC NO24’ PBR) was selected for its low, ultra-compact silhouette, its generous flowering and great hardiness. The cultivar Groundbreaker® Greeny quickly forms a dense carpet of well-branched vegetation, no more than 60 cm high, with a spread that can reach 80 cm. It produces green, conical and upright flower panicles 10 cm long from July until autumn; this flowering lasts nearly 100 days. Each inflorescence stands above the foliage, composed of ovate, light to medium green leaves. The foliage is deciduous: it falls in autumn and reappears in spring. This very hardy (down to –30 °C) variety tolerates temperature fluctuations well. It prefers light and well-drained soil rich in organic matter, which stays moist in summer.
With its naturally spreading habit, slightly trailing at the edges, Hydrangea paniculata Groundbreaker® Greeny is perfect for dressing the foreground of beds, creating long borders or greening a terrace. Cut its inflorescences to create beautiful cut flower arrangements. Combine it with border roses, summer heathers and large ornamental alliums such as 'Ambassador' or 'Mont Blanc'. On the terrace or balcony, it can live for many years with a few applications of fertiliser and regular watering.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Groundbreaker Greeny' is not demanding of soil type, provided it is not too heavy and not too chalky. It requires a sunny, non-scorching position or partial shade. Plant it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (horn or dried blood) will encourage your plant to establish and feed it without risk of burning. If your soil tends to be dry, mix well-rotted compost with the soil when filling the planting hole, mulch the base and create a watering basin on the surface. Growth in spring is quite late.
Hydrangea Paniculata: These shrubby hydrangeas with elongated inflorescences are more drought-resistant and establish easily even in non-acidic soil. They bloom profusely from June until the frosts. When planted in the sun, their inflorescences take on autumn colour.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.

This will vary depending on where you live:

Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
