This plant is magnificent. It is very graphic. The stems are closed and support a huge ball of flowers. I recommend it.

Description

Allium 'Ambassador' is a variety of ornamental garlic with large spherical mauve-lilac flowers, measuring at least 15cm (6in) in diameter.

Similar to Allium giganteum, the 'Ambassador' variety blooms earlier, with its inflorescences opening as early as June. Its globular umbels measure 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) in diameter and are made up of countless small star-shaped violet-lilac flowers, carried on sturdy stems at a height of approximately 1m (3ft). The deciduous ribbon-shaped basal leaves are grey-blue and die off before the flowers.

Its flowering period falls between that of A. 'Globemaster' and the later blooming A. giganteum. Easy to cultivate, 'Ambassador' thrives in any type of well-drained, sunny soil. It can be grown in flower beds or borders, or in pots to enjoy its beautiful blooms on a balcony or patio. Enhance your floral arrangements with its large flowers, or dry them for a unique touch!

Plant them in groups of 5, nestled among perennials, peonies, and roses, or combine them with trimmed boxwood balls for a spectacular sculptural effect.

Planting and care

Allium 'Ambassador' is easy to grow. Plant it preferably before the end of October so that it has time to establish itself. It fears winter moisture, so offer it a sunny spot in well-drained soil, even slightly stony. Plant it to a depth of 10 or 15cm (4 or 6in), spaced 15cm (6in) apart. It is undemanding but it does prefer poor soil. For container cultivation, water regularly as soil dries out quickly in pots.
